The best time of day for photos in Orlando's Lake Eola Park will definitely be golden hour and sunset.
As for how light affects specific spots, the North side of the park will receive more shade in the afternoon and evening due to the position of the sun, which casts shade on the walking paths due to many large trees. I use the position of the sun to place my clients in open shade while the sun is harsh. However, once the light softens, I usually move clients to the south side of the park near the World of Beer Restaurant, which receives more sun. Also, the observation deck is a favorite spot of mine to shoot while the sun is still strong, as the buildings in the Orlando skyline will block the harsh light. Typically, once the sun begins to set this area will receive low light and won't be suitable for good portraits, as skin tones will look gray and washed out.

In April, 2026 I had the honor of photographing a gentleman who was looking for new photos for his dating profiles. We decided on Lake Eola Park in order to have an urban backdrop to match his entrepreneur lifestyle. We began the shoot near a small foot-bridge crossing the pond on the north side of the park next to the Fantasy Swan Sculpture and Forum. I love this spot because it is more quiet and less crowded than the rest of the park, creating cleaner backgrounds. Then, I had my client walk naturally toward me across the bridge, then lean on the bridge and look out for some variety. Leaning on objects or walls gives the clients hands somewhere to be and reduces distractions in the photos. Next, we moved to the area next to the Lake Eola Pagoda and recreated the walking photos for a different look.
We then moved to the Lake Eola Peninsula and shot a few photos with the skyline in the background, framed by the Cypress Trees As the sunlight got softer for golden hour, we moved over to the Observation Deck so we could have the water fountain in the background. I love the view contrasting with the blue hues of Lake Eola and the buildings in the background. Lastly, we shot a few photos at the planters located on the East side of the park where I had my client cross one leg over for a more sophisticated gentleman look. This area was a bit more challenging to photograph at because people were constantly walking back and forth through the frame, so we had to keep waiting for pedestrians to walk out of the shot. Overall, we were able to keep the photos looking natural while capturing the beauty of Lake Eola against a Downtown Orlando backdrop.
