Why Oakland Nature Preserve is a great choice for WINTER gARDEN Photography

Not all outdoor locations are created equal.  Some locations are overcrowded, some are far from major attractions, and others lack variety.  Oakland Nature Preserve strikes the perfect balance.

First, the lighting here is incredibly consistent. The pine and oak tree canopy filters harsh sunlight, giving you soft, flattering tones throughout most of the day. That’s a huge advantage for lifestyle sessions where natural expressions matter more than stiff posing.

Second, the variety of scenery is unmatched for such a compact area. Within a short walk, you can move from wooded trails to open lake views to elevated boardwalks. This makes it ideal for a lifestyle photographer in Winter Garden who wants to create a full gallery without changing locations.  While walking around the Preserve, you'll see a variety of wildlife as well, such as butterflies, and other incredible animals.

Finally, it’s quiet. Compared to more popular Winter Garden photo locations, you won’t be fighting any crowds or waiting for backgrounds to clear up in order to take your Winter Garden family photos.

Top Photo Spots Inside Oakland Nature Preserve

One of the biggest advantages of this location is how many distinct looks you can capture in a single session. Here are the top spots I use as an Orlando photographer:

1. The Boardwalk Over Lake Apopka

This is the signature shot. The long wooden boardwalk stretches out over the water, creating leading lines that look incredible in photos.

2. Shaded Forest Trails

These areas are perfect for soft, intimate moments. The filtered light creates a natural glow that works beautifully for lifestyle sessions.

3. Tall Grass Fields

These spots give you that airy, natural look that many families love. They’re especially stunning during golden hour.

4. Lakefront Clearings

Open views of the water add variety and depth to your gallery. These are great for wide shots and movement-based photos.

5. The Education Center Area

This is a structure that is styled like a log cabin, which makes you feel like you aren't in Central Florida, but in some remote wilderness location.  This area has clean, simple backgrounds and is great for quick transitions between looks without walking far.  I love to pose families on the rocking chairs located in the porch area.  Sitting on these chairs will give your photos a laid-back country feel.

6. The Amphitheater

The amphitheater sits in a clearing in the interior of the park.  This particular spot provides excellent light because the pine forest backdrop behind the amphitheater filters light so we can achieve that "golden hour" vibe in your photos.  Also, it creates more background separation which blurs the background out creating a dreamy portrait look.

A skilled portrait photographer will move between these spots seamlessly to create a cohesive but diverse gallery.

What to Wear for Your Session at Oakland Nature Preserve

Wardrobe plays a huge role in how your photos turn out.   When it comes to Winter Garden family photography, I always guide my clients toward choices that complement the natural setting.

This is going to be a very off-the-beaten-path type of location.  It is relatively rugged terrain with a lot of trails, dirt, sand, rocks, and most importantly, trees! Stick with very neutral and earthy tones like beige, cream, olive, soft blues, and warm browns.   These colors blend beautifully with the environment and keep the focus on your connection.

Avoid bright neon colors, busy patterns, and overly bright and saturated colors.  They can distract from the emotion of the image and clash with the natural surroundings.

Flowy dresses work especially well for women because they add movement to your photos. For families, coordinating colors (not matching exactly) creates a more polished and natural look.

Comfort definitely matters too. You’ll be walking on trails and boardwalks, so choose footwear that’s both practical and stylish.

Is Oakland Nature Preserve Good for Family Photography?

Absolutely. In fact, it’s one of my top recommendations as a photographer in Winter Garden, FL.  There is so much to explore!

The space allows kids to move freely, which leads to more natural expressions. Instead of forcing them to sit still, we can incorporate play and exploration into the session.

Parents also tend to feel more relaxed here. The peaceful environment makes it easier to connect with your family, which shows in the final images.

Because of the variety of backgrounds, you’ll end up with a gallery that feels dynamic and complete, not repetitive.

Tips for a Successful oakland nature preserve photo Session

Planning ahead can make the difference between a good session and an unforgettable one. Here are my top tips:

Arrive Early - Even though there is plenty of parking, and this location is never very crowded, give yourself time to park, walk in, and settle before your session starts.  The parking lot is a bit of a walk from the specific spots we will be shooting at such as the boardwalk, amphitheater, and butterfly forest.

Bring Water and Bug Spray - It’s Florida. Staying comfortable helps you stay relaxed and present.  Think heat, humidity and maybe some bugs.  Although don't let this scare you off, I've shot here in the summer evenings and have not witnessed too many mosquitoes around.  Bringing bug spray is really just a suggestion for any outdoor location in Florida.  Better safe than sorry, right?! You just never know.

Trust the Process - Relax, you got this.  The best photos come from natural interaction, not forced poses. Let your photographer guide you.

Plan Around Kids’ Schedules - For family sessions, timing around naps and meals makes a huge difference.  Kids are more receptive to taking photos if they are fed, rested, and in a good mood.  Nothing can ruin a Winter Garden photo session more than grumpy or "hangry" kids!

Be Open to Movement - Walking, laughing, and interacting create the most authentic images and spoiler alert: These are my favorite types of photos!

Limit Distractions - Leave unnecessary items in the car so you can stay focused on the experience.  Take your valuables with you of course.  Remember, safety first! But you can leave other times in your car.

An experienced family photographer will guide you through all of this, but coming prepared helps everything run smoothly.

GET TO KNOW THE AREA: CITY OF OAKLAND,  FL

The town of Oakland, Florida is a small, historic community on the western edge of the Orlando area, known for its charm, quiet pace, and deep roots along Lake Apopka. Originally established in the late 1800s during Florida’s citrus boom, Oakland still carries that Old Florida character with tree-lined streets, historic homes, and a strong sense of community.

Today, it’s best known for its proximity to the West Orange Trail, its scenic lakefront views, and its balance between rural tranquility and easy access to nearby areas like Winter Garden and Orlando. Residents and visitors are drawn to Oakland for its preserved natural spaces, slower lifestyle, and small-town feel that stands in contrast to the busier tourist hubs nearby.

It’s the kind of place where you’ll find locals biking at sunset, families enjoying the outdoors, and a strong appreciation for nature and history, making it a unique and increasingly sought-after pocket of Central Florida.  No other city in central Florida captures the raw natural beauty and rustic vibes that Oakland offers.
